Police investigating incident
by Carolyn James

Amityville Village Police responded to a call about shots being fired at Amityville Memorial High School Feb. 18.

The call went into police at approximately 5:30 p.m. and the caller said they heard what sounded like three gun shots go off. The caller also told police that approximately 30 young people were in front of the high school.

Several other calls into police headquarters corroborated that information and APOs Charles D. Taylor, Kyle Miller, John A. Andriella and Pamela Slack responded, along with a canine unit.

One shooter was described by witnesses as a black male in his teens wearing a black jacket with large white letters on the front and a black baseball hat. Further investigation revealed that the incident occurred on the west side of the parking lot and spilled over into the side parking lot at 200 Merrick Road.  APO Andriella, while canvassing the area, found a jean jacket on the ground, which was placed into evidence.

Witnesses said the subjects ran westbound on Merrick Road and then came back and got into  two separate vehicles, possibly a black Mercendes SUV and an unknown make sedan.

Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives responded and established a crime scene on the west side of the high school. They are continuing their investigation. Anyone with information can call the First Squad at 854-8100.
